Little Shop Newsletter - August 2008

Welcome to August! Hot enough for Ya?
Yes, it's hot outside, but hey...it's better than freezing in the middle of winter, and scraping ice off your car, then having it not start...and then getting it started, only to find out you are stuck in a snow drift and you have to have the neighbor kids come over and shovel you out, while throwing kitty litter under your tires, but managing somehow to get some on your pants and in the front seat of your car. Then you get to work and find out just about everyone has called in except for you because of the weather, so you have to do all their work, and then you go to get a nice hot cup of coffee, but it's all gone and no one is going to be able to make a run to Costco until Thursday, and then you find out the heat in the building hasn't come on yet and the person who has the key to the thermostat is one of the people who stayed home...so yeah, maybe the heat of August isn't all THAT bad, huh??

Even so, I know it's hot, and you might need a cool break, so here are a few funny one liners to make your day go a little faster. Feel free to use them as needed, make bumper stickers, write in magic marker on a T-shirt or put them on your screen saver:

I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by.

Tell me what you need, and I'll tell you how to get along without it.
My reality check bounced.

On the keyboard of life, always keep one finger on the escape key.

I don't suffer from stress. I am a carrier.
Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
If at first you don't succeed...... skydiving isn't for you.
And finally... Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience!

NEW AGILITY EQUIPMENT!!
There is still plenty of summer left, so now is a great time to get outside and exercise with your dogs. And there's nothing as fun as AGILITY training. It beats a boring walk through the neighborhood or another game of fetch!

We have FOUR new items this month. First up...the Competition PANEL JUMP. The challenge of the panel jump is that the dog has to clear what looks like a solid wall to him. The panel jump is also an agility obstacle used in obedience trials. The "wall" is made of 6 individual panels resting on 12 pairs of jump cups. All weather construction - never needs painting. Includes free tape for decorating. One of the best prices for a Panel Jump you'll find anywhere!

Next, we have the LADDER. Did you know most dogs don't realize they have back feet? They just go where their nose and eyes lead them and everything else follows. By having a dog walk inside ladder rungs, it helps the dog gain confidence on the dogwalk, teeter, or anywhere it must use all four feet quickly and accurately! The ladder is 7 Foot long with rungs spaced 12" apart (good for any size dog), and it stands a few inches off the ground. Comes with easy assembly and training instructions.

The ROCKER BOARD does it all - it rocks, wobbles and teeters. Another Affordable Agility exclusive, the Rocker Board is used to teach dogs to be more confident with movement under their feet. Start with it in "Rocker Mode" to make it wobble (in a rocking fashion) to get your dog accustomed to a moving surface. Then, using the pivot-adaptor piece, you can convert this board to "Teeter Mode," to replicate the flip-flop movement of a teeter board. Perfect for introducing puppies to this challenging aspect of agility, or for building more confidence in a hesitant dog! Because of the Rocker's minimal movement, you can repeat the exercises without tiring your dog.

And finally, we have the PAUSE TABLE, the infamous place where your speeding bullet has to stop and rest for a loooooooong 5 seconds - a challenge for many energetic dogs. The regulation size 35" x 35" top has routed edges for safety and features a reliable traction surface. Comes with free tote bag for carrying the legs.

Little Shop Newsletter - July 2008

WELCOME TO JULY!
Well, I don’t know where you are as you read this, but we are in Missouri, and the heat of summer has officially arrived. That's why my Yorkie Ellie thinks the best place to be is on the edge of a recliner in the air conditioning. Doesn't she look comfortable? Another fun thing my Yorkies like to do in the heat of the afternoon is to patrol the backyard from the cool comfort of the indoors. Currently, a bunny has their full attention.

We have a few new items this month, and of course a new Terror Photo contest winner, AND an exlusive NEWSLETTER special, so be sure to check everything out and enjoy the newsletter, but first...since it IS summer, we would like to pass along a few summer tips for pets. These tips are courtesy of PetMD.org, which is dedicated to pet health care.

Provide WATER in multiple locations for your pet. Water bowls can turn over easily, get dirty or grow bacteria and your pet can be left without cool, fresh, clean water. When you travel (or hike), take water with you for your pet.

NEVER LEAVE your pet in the car. It takes only a few minutes for the auto to get hot, even with cracked windows - plus it is against the law in many states.

Know your pet's HEAT TOLERANCE. Heat and humidity, along with age, health, obesity and type of breed or type of pet factor into heat tolerance. Dogs and cats, whose normal body temperature is between 100 and 102.5, don't do well in heat, especially if they get dehydrated. Cats sweat through their paws and will lick themselves to cool down, become inactive and seek cool places - however, above 85 or 90 degrees they can get stressed. Dogs do not lose heat as fast as humans, and heat can become a health risk quickly.

Throw away UNEATEN PET FOOD. Bacteria grows faster when it is hot, so uneaten pet food should be thrown out. More frequent, smaller portions may be appropriate during the summer.

Know what is TOXIC to your pet. Plants, household items and foods such as chocolate, onions, coffee, nicotine, alcoholic beverages, poultry bones, fatty foods and grapes/raisins can be harmful.

PET ID. Pets are more active in the summer, chase other animals, can be with you traveling in an unfamiliar place and end up lost. The pet's name and your phone number on its collar can be a lifesaver.

Check your pet for fleas, ticks, and mites. CHECK AND GROOM your pet daily (cats, dogs) to assure that they do not have fleas, ticks, mites, mosquito bites, or other infections or rashes from being outdoors.

Watch out for ANTIFREEZE. Hot weather may tempt your pet to drink from puddles in the street, which may contain antifreeze or other chemicals. Antifreeze tastes sweet, but is extremely toxic.

Keep FISH TANKS away from sunlight. The temperature of fish is directly affected by water temperature. If the sun heats the water, it can harm fish.

In climates where it is very hot, try to WALK OR EXERCISE your pet in the morning or early evening when it is cooler.

SPEAKING OF WALKS...I have said it before and I'll say it again - get out there and take a walk with your pets as often as possible. Here at Little Shop of Terrors, we want to make it easy and fashionable for you and your pet. So we are offering new harnesses this month from PUPPIA that are just perfect for summer. Take it from us, these harnesses are AMAZING QUALITY.

The PUPPIA soft harness pictured above is a Soft Air Mesh Harness that provides comfort at the neck and chest area. The one piece neck portion of the harness fits over the head and the re-sizable chest belt secures in back with a snap together buckle. Adjust the belt for a perfect fit. And just look at all the available colors!!! Don't forget to order the matching two-tone lead to complete your set.

Also new this month from PUPPIA is the Soft B Vest Harness pictured below, which is a step-in harness that makes it SUPER EASY to put on for both you and your little terror. In fact, there is a video on our website that demonstrates a dog walking right into this harness. Check it out by clicking HERE. DOG PRANKS
This is just for the dogs. Humans, stop reading now. Okay dogs, here are more fun pranks you can pull around the house. Enjoy. Just don’t tell anyone where you heard this:

When your human calls you to come back in from your outdoor adventures, always take your time. Walk as slowly as possible back to the door. The humans just love this one.

Wake up one hour before the alarm clock is set to go off and make the humans take you out to do your morning business. As soon as you get back inside, fall asleep and snore loudly. (Humans can rarely fall back asleep after going outside, so this will drive them nuts!)

Little Shop Newsletter - June 2008

It's JUNE! Happy Summer!!
Well, it's finally here. The kids are out of school, the pools are open, the sun is high, making it hot outside, people are enjoying vacations and reunions and barbecues and days at the beach, or just relaxing at home on the back deck. Meanwhile, Yorkies everywhere are taking it easy, relaxing on a sofa or a comfy bed with the air conditioning running at full blast. The two Yorkies pictured above, Ellie and Rylie, are enjoying a cool evening breeze as they scan their backyard for the occasional stray squirrel or bunny rabbit. If the conditions are good, they'll give chase, but if it's too hot to run...well, then it's a lucky day for a squirrel.

Besides all the fun outdoor activities this time of year, another fun thing to do is shop. You can shop at the mall, or an outlet center, but best of all...shop in the comfort of your home from your computer and save a little gas! And don't forget, the absolute BEST part of shopping at the Little Shop of Terrors is that we always offer FREE SHIPPING!!!

We have new totes this month at the Little Shop of Terrors, and some Pet A Roo carriers that are overstocked and ON SALE. We have some new items from CLASSY CUSTOM Pet Portals, so your pet can get outside and enjoy the weather. Also, just in time for the swimming pool season, we have some new pet immersion pool alarms from SAFETY TURTLE that can help save your pets life. If you have pets and a swimming pool, definitely check out the Safety Turtle stuff below. Along these same lines, you'll have to check out the video for the SCAMPER RAMP that provides a place for your pet and other animals to get out of a pool, should they fall or jump in.

NEW STUFF
Check out this ARGYLE CLASSICS Pet Tote. You will love this bag! Not only does it look great with it's classy lines, this bag has many nice little features that more expensive bags leave out. The inside of this bag is as elegant as the outside. The sides are lined with designer insignia padded lining. The bottom liner is nicely padded for comfort. It has a removable cover for easy cleaning that matches the outside of the bag. Made of polyester with a matching collar clip to keep pets inside, it is available in OLIVE or BERRY. For pets up to 10 pounds.
Here's another new tote. The Copperstone Creek Faux Leather Tote / Pet Carrier with paw print zipper tag. Salmon with white color. This bag features a roll down mesh window side and mesh window at the top. The wide shoulder strap ensures comfortable carrying of your pet, and a zipper side pocket ensures convienience. The studded details make this already classy bag a rival of the most expensive designer totes on the market. Measures 16" long, 11" h and 8" w to hold pets up to 10 pounds. The inside of this bag is as elegant as the outside. The sides are lined with a padded lining while the bottom liner is nicely padded for comfort. A matching collar clip keeps pets inside.

OVERSTOCK - We have too many Pet A Roos by Outward Hound in the GREEN color. Unfortunately, we don't have any pictures of the green color available, but you can look at the other Pet A Roos by clicking HERE and know that our overstocked items can SAVE YOU CASH!!

WEBSITE AWARD! We've created a new Website Award we want to encourage you to apply for, if you have a Yorkie related site web address, submit it to us, and apply for your I'M A TERROR TOO website award.

MORE NEW STUFF
We have a whole bunch of great new items from SAFETY TURTLE on our dog lifejacket and pool ramp page. If you are not familiar with the SAFETY TURTLE system, it is a Pet Safety, Pet Immersion Alarm. There is a base unit and collar attachments. If your pet gets in the pool, it might be able to swim, but will drown within minutes if not trained to get out of the pool. Over 5000 dogs drown each year in backyard pools. With the Safety Turtle immersion alarm collar on your pet, you will be notified if your pet gets in the water. A loud alarm instantly sounds at the base station and continues to sound until it is reset.

Another thing that might save your pet's life should they get in the pool is the SCAMPER RAMP. The ramp provides animals with a way out of water in pools. The simple white, ribbed, hi-tech plastic ramp attaches to the side of a pool, dock, or even a boat. Because all living beings see white, they can see it day or night and they scamper out on the ramp. Easy to assemble & install - deck hardware included. Safe for pools with vinyl liners. 2 year warranty. Available in two sizes.

TO SEE A VIDEO OF THE SCAMPER RAMP IN ACTION, CLICK HERE.

HIDE A SQUIRREL TOY - Speaking of VIDEOS, we happen to have a video of the HIDE A SQUIRREL Pet Toy in action!!! You can see it on our webpage by clicking HERE, or you can check it out on YouTube HERE. The Hide-A-Squirrel will not only keep pets occupied and eliminate boredom, but they also develop a dog's intelligence and puzzle-solving skills. Just hide the soft plush squirrels inside the log for dogs to remove over and over. Durable and long lasting, with replacement squirrels available.

CLASSY CUSTOM PET PORTALS
Yes, most people would call these pet doors, or doggie doors, but when they are THIS fancy....you have to call them a Pet Portal. These pet doors feature elegance and design that will coordinate with your home's decor. Features include: Mix N Match decorative frames that attach and detach from the pet door, elegant modern design steel security door with handsome dead bolt for added protection, extremely durable silicone weather tight flexible flap that reseals consistently, and adjustable door thickness panels for easy installation. Thickness panels enable the pet door to fit the thickness of a door from 2" to 1/16". Okay, well, maybe I'm getting ahead of myself a bit on the vacation thing...but that time is coming soon, and since I'm a summer lover, I can't wait. But maybe, just maybe you have a tough little dog who won't be caught outside in pink, or lavender or even blue. Maybe you have a big dog who is very cool and in need of some skull and crossbone DOGGLES to fit his or her attitude. Well, you and your dog are in luck because this month we have a brand new design - silver with grey lenses, and yes, a skull and crossbone design. How cool are these?

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on the purple box "fund food for animals." This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising. Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know. http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/
